Gallery 427: “The world that I chose”
Darrell Hagan’s recent series of acrylic paintings allow the viewer to feel as though they might walk into the scene by utilizing space and wide openness as a major part of the composition which makes the art about the hidden meanings inherent in the work. La Boulangerie Marguerite-NE will host a juried art show curated around the theme of nourishment. Located at 300 13th Ave. NE, the bakery and cafe invites visual artists' responses to the question, "What does it mean to nourish and be nourished?" “Open Screen: The Forum”
Public Functionary, 1500 Jackson St. NE, presents "Open Screen: The Forum," a free three-week program that combines screenings, workshops, panels and scenic installation, May 1-18. Film screenings include "All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt," the debut feature by Raven Jackson which traces the life of a Black woman in Mississippi through quiet, poetic scenes — holding space for memory, grief and love. Find out more »Exhibit opening: “We Are Here To Stay” the California Building Story
Friday, May 2, 7-9 pm. This immersive and interactive exhibition celebrates the legacy of the California Building, from the exodus of the downtown art scene to NE Minneapolis starting in 1991. The California Building became the first factory in Northeast Minneapolis dedicated entirely to workspace for artists. The exhibition will also open to the public on Saturday afternoons from 1-5 pm, during Art-A-Whirl from May 16-18, or by appointment. Arts District Welcome Center, 904 14th Ave. NE.

Local Deaf artist Kaylah Vogt seeks a nonprofit sponsor for an art raffle during Art-A-Whirl. Proceeds will support her family, who are all out of work caring for her grandmother after a major stroke. Minnesota law requires raffles to be run through a nonprofit. Kaylah will handle the artwork, promotion and logistics. If interested in partnering, contact kaylahvogt.network@gmail.com. Kaylah will donate a percentage to the nonprofit for partnering.

Lili Lennox draws inspiration from the vast backdrops she once painted in her career as a theatrical scenic artist. Using the same techniques, her paintings dive into a realm where highly saturated colors converge with the Minnesota landscape, depicting luminous trees and brooding skies infused with unconventional hues.
