The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) held an outdoor “open house” on July 23 to introduce two bridge designs for the proposed pedestrian trail bridge across the Mississippi River. The bridge would connect North and Northeast. The more than 70 people viewed several storyboards with design renderings as MPRB Project Manager Tyler Pederson answered questions.

If you grew up in Northeast from the 1930s to the 1960s, chances are you had a relative or knew someone who worked at B. F. Nelson Co., a manufacturer of paper and roofing products. The smell of hot asphalt emanating from the building at 401 Main St. NE permeated the neighborhood, but residents didn’t mind. In the words of Connie Szczech, “The smell of B. F. Nelson was a scent that didn’t bother any of us. It smelled like tar. In fact, we enjoyed it because it meant food on our table.”

Incumbent Sandra Feist and KT Jacobs are both seeking election to Minnesota House District 39B in November. The district encompasses Columbia Heights, Hilltop and St. Anthony.
Three candidates vie for two seats on CH Council
With only three candidate filings for two Columbia Heights City Council seats opening in 2025, there was no primary runoff this August. Incumbent Connie Buesgens, Laurel Deneen and Ali Farah are all slated to appear on the ballot this November in the general election. Each candidate was asked to provide responses to a set of questions regarding their qualifications and goals as a council member.
