Classics in Poetry: Gerard Manly Hopkins
Catholic Eldercare will host a free presentation on Monday, Feb. 4, 1:30-3 pm at the MainStreet Lodge, 909 Main St. NE. Born in 1844 near London, Gerard Manly Hopkins was deeply religious. He converted to Catholicism and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1877. He spent much of his career teaching. In 1878, he became Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Dublin. The Valley View Elementary Parent Teacher Organization in Columbia Heights is collecting new and used shoes in wearable condition, through March 8. Donated shoes are repurposed through micro-enterprises in developing countries, and each pair of shoes earns funds for Valley View Elementary School.
