Northeast UMC offers classes on walipinis
Northeast United Methodist Church, 2510 Cleveland Street NE, will offer three free classes on walipinis (underground greenhouses). The church experimented with a walipini in the parsonage backyard, trying to grow food during the winter. Find out what they've learned. "Walipini: What? Why? How?" will be presented Thursday, March 21, 6-7:30 pm. "Walipini: Deconstruction" is set for Saturday, April 27 at 9 am. The Mel Hart Scholarship Fundraiser Pancake Breakfast will be Saturday, April 27, 9-11 am, at The Unofficial, 3701 Stinson Blvd. Proceeds will go to St. Anthony High School in memory of Melvin E. Hart, Class of 1963, Private U.S. Marine Corps, who was killed in action near Da Nang, Vietnam, May 4, 1966.

Empty Bowls NE will hold its sixth annual fundraiser April 28, 11 am-6 pm at its headquarters at East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd St. NE. Suggested donation: $20 (includes handmade ceramic bowl and all you can eat soup from local restaurants). Proceeds raised go toward three Northeast hunger causes: The Sheridan Story (kids), Helping Hand Food Pantry (adults), and East Side Neighborhood Services' Senior Food Shelf (seniors).

The Northeast Community Band will perform the afternoon of April 28 at the Landmark Center, 75 W Fifth Street, St. Paul. The group is participating in “Band Width,” an annual celebration of community-based bands. The lineup includes Capri Big Band, 12:30; Northeast Community Band, 1:20; South Washington Community Band, 2:10; Capital City Wind Ensemble, 3:00; Century College Concert Band, 3:50; Lex-Ham Community Band, 4:40. The event is free.
