Newgate 50th Anniversary
Nonprofit Newgate School, 2900 E. Hennepin Ave., will celebrate its 50th year of offering free mechanic school training to underserved young adults on Saturday, Aug. 2, 10 am-2 pm. The event will include a car show, music, food trucks, awards, raffles and kids' activities. Suggested donation: $10.

Zen priest Genpo Michael O'Neal will present key themes of Zen practice in the context of the Wizard of Oz, followed by a showing of the classic film in a rare Technicolor print screened at only a few theaters in the country. The 25th anniversary event will conclude with a catered reception at the beautiful Heights Theater. Sunday, Aug. 3, 1 pm, The Heights Theater, 3951 Central Ave. NE. Catherine Tong, a botanical artist working primarily in watercolor, has lived in Northeast Minneapolis for 9 years. She's one of 19 artists who will have their art auctioned off at the Hennepin Event Center, 900 Hennepin Ave., Friday, Aug. 8, 5-10 pm. Nordeast Rock the Block
East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd St. NE, invites all community members to attend their family-friendly block party and fundraiser Satruday, Sept. 27, 2-5 pm. Pumpkins & Powerdrills
Pumpkins & Powerdrills, the Minnesota Tool Library's annual fundraiser, will take place across three locations and dates: Saturday, Oct. 25, 12-4 pm at Bauhaus Brew Labs, 1315 Tyler St. NE; 1-5 pm Sunday, Oct. 26 at Fulton Taproom, 414 N. 6th Ave.; and 5-9 pm Thursday, Oct. 30 at BlackStack Brewing, 755 Prior Ave. N, St. Paul. PACIM Soup Festival
The Polish Cultural Institute of Minnesota (PACIM) will hold a Soup Festival fundraiser at Holy Cross Church, 1621 University Ave. NE, on Sunday, Nov. 16, 10:30 am to 3 pm. The soups will be mushroom, dill pickle, cabbage, tomato, potato, Żurek, and beet. Bigos will also be served. Proceeds go to support and promote both contemporary and traditional Polish-American culture.

Mel Hart graduated from St. Anthony Village High School in 1963. Tragically, he was killed in action on May 4, 1966, while serving his country.
