East of Central Avenue along 18th Avenue, at left, new Century Link and Xcel Energy poles have been installed, and the utilities are moving wires from the south set to the north set. In spring when the old south poles and lines are removed, workers can also remove the temporary bituminous paths and install permanent shared 13-foot wide paths for pedestrians and bicyclers. The new poles will be surrounded by grass boulevards and trees that will mature at heights below where they could interfere with the utility lines. City spokesperson Bev Warmka explained that it would have been cost prohibitive to bury the utilities.
