On March 14, church officials revealed that at least four ballots from African delegations were fraudulently cast during the February 26 General Assembly, calling into question among Methodists the integrity of the Assembly’s voting process. While the 54-vote margin against gay clergies and same-sex marriage far outpaces the four unearthed cases of fraud, investigations into the ballot process are now underway, as well as discussions about possibly repeating the vote. The Judicial Assembly will still assess the ethical standing of the decision in late April, but the discovery adds increased friction to an already turbulent moment in the Methodist Church’s history.
