A celebration of life in memory of Niles R. Schulz will be held on Sunday, August 12, in the Edison High School auditorium, followed by a gathering at Solar Arts Building. Schulz died on Tuesday July 10, 2018 in a canoeing accident in the BWCA. He was canoeing and camping with his grandson Richard and his friends John Vandermyde Sr and John Vandermyde Jr. and Alex Vandermyde. They were introducing their 8-year-old grandsons / sons to a place they loved.
After graduating from Zumbrota High School and Augsburg University, Niles Schulz left a legacy in Northeast Minneapolis and at Edison High School as an English teacher and football and wrestling coach. He was an active volunteer with many organizations: Edison Community & Sports Foundation, PFLAG/PFund, AIDS Bike Rides, teaching English to U of M visiting scholars, and tutoring young readers at Pratt Community School.
The celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. with time to meet and visit with the Schulz family in the Alumni Room at Edison High School. At 3 p.m., a program to celebrate Schulz’s life will be held in the Edison auditorium.
