The 2026 primary elections were held on August 12, 2026. Positions in Northeast, Columbia Heights, Hilltop and St. Anthony were on the ballot. The general election will be on Nov. 3 of this year.
State representatives
In Minnesota Legislative District 60B, which includes Northeast Minneapolis, Mohamud Noor will be advancing to this year’s primary under the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) ticket. He earned roughly 85% of the vote.
District 39B includes St. Anthony and Columbia Heights. KT Jacobs, who ran uncontested, will be advancing as that district’s Republican nominee. Amáda Márquez Simula, a Democrat and the Mayor of Columbia Heights, earned roughly two-thirds of the vote and faces Jacobs in November.
Hennepin County
Cedrick Frazier won roughly 36% of the vote for Hennepin County Attorney. The Attorney is a nonpartisan position. He faces Anders Folk in November in a contest to replace Mary Moriarty, who announced she would not seek a second term last summer.
Irene Fernando, the current Hennepin County District 2 Commissioner, faces Sharon El-Amin for the position. Fernando received over 55% of votes cast, while El-Amin got roughly 21%.
School Board At-Large
Five candidates — Christin Crabtree, Stephanie Johnson, Clifton “CJ” Henderson, Collin Beachy and Michael Baskins — were in the running for School Board Member At-Large. Beachy is an incumbent. Henderson received the fewest votes of the five, and will not continue to the general election. In November, the two candidates with the most votes will be named to the School Board. Crabtree and Beachy, who received the largest shares of votes, are both DFL-endorsed.
U.S. Representatives and Senators
John Nagel, a Republican, faces Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, in the race to represent District 5 in the U.S. Congress. Peggy Flanagan, a Democrat, challenges Michele Tafoya, a Republican, in the race to serve as a U.S. Senator.
Governor and Secretary of State
Lisa Demuth, a Republican, faces Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, in the race to be the next Governor of Minnesota. This race follows Tim Walz’s decision not to run for a third term. Tad Jude is the Republican nominee for Secretary of State; he faces Steve Simon, a Democrat incumbent, in a contest for the position.
