City Council, Mayor’s office host listening sessions on MPD chief
The search for a new Minneapolis Chief of Police is underway. Public Sector Search & Consulting (PSSC), a national search firm dedicated to recruiting police executives, is leading the effort. Listening sessions were held across the Minneapolis area. At the listening sessions, members of the public had opportunities to voice their concerns about and hopes for the position.
Next, PSSC will post a job opening and begin recruitment. Mayor Jacob Frey will review the list of finalists, conduct interviews and submit the final selection to the Minneapolis City Council. No timeline has been posted at time of reporting.
School Board candidates to meet at forum
On Sept. 16, Minneapolis School Board a-large candidates Michael Baskins, Collin Beachy, Christin Crabtree and Stephanie Johnson will meet at Broken Clock Brewery, 1712 Marshall St. NE, for an open forum about the position. The event, hosted by the MPS School Board Voter Guide and the St. Anthony West Neighborhood Organization, is free and open to all interested parties.
40th Avenue NE reconstruction begins
Reconstruction of 40th Avenue NE from Main Street to University Avenue will begin Monday, Sept. 21. Between Main Street and 3rd Street, the road will include two through lanes, parking lanes on both sides and a sidewalk and trail with boulevard space. From 3rd Street to University Ave, the roadway layout will remain unchanged, but the pavement will be replaced. The City of Columbia Heights completed sanitary sewer and water main upgrades in 2025, and CenterPoint Energy completed gas main relocation work this summer. Work is expected to be completed in November.
Reuse Minnesota announces fundraiser
Several Northeast Minneapolis connections are evident in an online auction underway raising funds for Reuse Minnesota. Northeast resident Audrey Woychick, a Reuse Minnesota board member, managed the effort and populated the platform. Margo Ashmore, former Northeaster publisher, is board president and contributed or arranged for some of the items. Local artists Layl McDill and Becca David have experiences up for bid. Habitat for Humanity ReStore contributed a new-in-box overstock recliner.
Reuse Minnesota builds partnerships and supports a vibrant network of reuse practitioners through education, advocacy and promotion.
Link to bid through 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 is www.givebutter.com/c/2026ReuseMinnesotaFundraiser/auction. In the spirit of not making new “stuff,” most of the offerings are experiences, pre-loved or upcycled décor and accessories.
