Mestiizo Bar to open in Northeast
A new bar is coming to Northeast. In early December, Danny Guerrero, a bartender with a lengthy history in Minneapolis, will open Mestiizo Bar, 337 13th Ave. NE. The establishment takes the place of ALTBuRGEr, which closed at the beginning of this year.
The bar’s food and drink programs will blend Asian and Latin flavors. “This is something that I’ve been dreaming of for at least the past seven years,” Guerrero said in a recent interview.

Vegan restaurant reopens
On November 14, Herbivorous Butcher, 507 1st Ave NE, a restaurant which calls itself “the nation’s first vegan butcher shop,” is set to reopen. The business ceased operations in May after a fire damaged their Northeast storefront.
“This reopening is more than just turning the lights back on,” restaurant ownership wrote on social media. “It’s a celebration of our community’s strength, kindness, and love.” They went on to thank patrons “for believing in us, donating, and cheering us on — this reopening belongs to all of you.”

New coffee shop in Heights
In early November, Heights Coffee Bar, 850 40th Ave. NE, opened its doors. According to a press release, the 20-seat coffee shop “provides classic espresso drinks and pastries from local bakeries.”
“I’ve always deeply cared about how a space feels for those who enjoy coffee so much,” said Holly Tuhake, who co-owns the café with her wife. “We saw a missing piece in our neighborhood and decided to try our hand at being the ones to fill it in.”
They currently serve coffee from Duluth Coffee Company and SK Coffee, and they offer baked goods from local bakeries such as Aki’s BreadHaus and Janna’s Gluten-Free Bakery.
