Karen Kraco first met Elden Megow at a holiday market at the Northeast United Methodist Church last November. She reflects:
Elden had wandered over to the table where I was displaying photos of wildlife and insects. “Do you like bugs?” I asked. He gave me a look that, at the time, I didn’t quite know how to read, then proceeded to study a photo of a caterpillar.
I asked him if he knew the kind of caterpillar he was looking but before I finished my question he identified it as a black swallowtail caterpillar, then pointed out a great black wasp. He moved closer to get a good look at the detail of a grasshopper photo and then identified a couple of honeybees. His dad, Andy Megow, who had been across the room, walked over to join him. “I see you’ve found your table,” he said.
Off and on for a couple of months this summer, Karen followed Elden in his bugging discoveries. Her report is on pages 1 and 8 of the printed 8-21-19 Northeaster. To read it online in its flipbook form, go to our Archive.
