A: People in the Northeaster’s coverage area have long memories.
The Argus and the Northeaster are completely different newspapers. The East Side Argus was published from 1890 to 1926. The name was changed to the East Minneapolis Argus, and the paper ran under that moniker until 1957. Then it ran as the Minneapolis Argus from 1957-1971. That was the year Sun Newspapers bought the newspaper and renamed it the Minneapolis Argus-Sun. The paper focused more on surrounding suburbs. It folded in 1973.
In 1978, a handful of community members decided to do something about the lack of a local newspaper and started publishing the Northeaster. They sold ads and wrote stories and managed to put it out on a regular basis. Through grit and determination, they kept it going until 1981, when Kerry and Margo Ashmore bought the paper. Since then, the Northeaster has expanded its coverage to include Columbia Heights, Hilltop and St. Anthony Village in addition to Northeast Minneapolis. Vince Brown took on the role of publisher in 2022.
