The Lost Gateway District of Minneapolis walking tour
Sunday, August 6, 10-11:30 am. During the early 20th century, the Gateway District (or Lower Loop) was the largest Skid Row in the Upper Midwest. Flophouses, missions and bars mixed with a variety of other businesses that needed cheap rents and a central location. Celebrate the monarch butterfly Wednesday, Aug. 9, starting at 5 pm at Kordiak Park, 1845 49th Ave. NE. A bilingual Spanish and English celebration with monarch and pollinator information booths, food trucks, games, traditional Mexican dance and music, an Encanto and Coco dance party, a monarch costume parade and an opportunity to learn more about how to help monarch butterflies. Sisters’ Camelot is distributing free food at Northeast United Methodist Church, 2510 Cleveland St. NE, 2:30-3:30 pm the third Tuesday of every month. The next food distribution will be on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Established 26 years ago, Sisters’ Camelot is a local nonprofit that distributes prepacked bags of groceries as well as bulk produce twice a week throughout the Twin Cities.

Columbia Heights Public Schools will hold early childhood screenings on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 12-6 pm; Wednesday, Aug. 16, 8:30 am-2:30 pm; and Thursday, Aug. 17, 8:30 am-2:30 pm. Screening is required by MN State Statute 121A.17 for entrance into Minnesota public schools or within 30 days of kindergarten enrollment. Screening is best completed at three years of age.
