Speaker to discuss impacts of an oil train tragedy
April 20 @ 4:45 pm
Citizens Acting for Rail Safety Twin Cities and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health are hosting a speaker, Mélissa Généreux, on the community impacts of an oil train tragedy, Friday, April 20, at the Wilder Foundation Auditorium, 451 Lexington Pkwy N., in St. Paul. There will be refreshments at 4:45 pm and a presentation at 5:15 pm.
Généreux was the Chief Public Health Officer for Quebec’s Eastern Townships responding to the event July 6, 2013, when a train carrying 72 cars of crude oil derailed in Lac-Mégantic, Canada, causing 47 deaths, the destruction of 44 buildings, an evacuation of 2,000 people, and a catastrophic oil spill. Organizers of this free presentation and discussion include Northeast Minneapolis residents who are concerned about the impact of high-hazard freight trains in the community. Space is limited.
