DESCRIPTION:The Great Northern Festival runs Jan. 23-Feb. 2. Following are events in Northeast: Chasing Time\, Saturday\, Jan. 25\, 7 pm \, Main Cinema\, 115 SE Main St.\, cost: $15. Over the course of the 15-year Extreme Ice Survey project\, photographer James Balog and his team brought some of the world’s first and most compelling visual evidence of climate change to the global stage as he depicted the rapid melting of glaciers around the world. The short documentary captures the end of the epic undertaking and spotlights the power of an intergenerational effort to seed hope and inspire action toward a sustainable future. In September 2024\, Prescott and The Great Northern hosted a potluck dinner with five artists\, writers and community leaders — José Luis\, Ifrah Mansour\, Kate Beane\, Kao Kalia Yang and Eyenga Bokamba. Each guest brought a family dish\, sharing the stories and cultural significance behind their recipes. This intimate gathering was captured in a short documentary film. Inspired by trees’ underground communication network\, composers/performers Angélica Negrón\, Darian Donovan Thomas and Raquel Acevedo Klein collaborate in an evening of live unfolding soundscapes using voices\, violin\, plants\, flowers\, bells\, synths\, accordion\, water\, found objects and mechanical percussion. Often called real-life mermaids\, the haenyeo divers of South Korea’s Jeju Island are renowned for centuries of diving to the ocean floor — without oxygen — to harvest seafood for their livelihood.
